"In 2006, the automotive moulder became profit making for the first time in five years as a result of a turnaround programme that had a large training and development element. It had also reduced its accident rates by 84% from the 2004 level. This represented a huge change as the 2004 indicators for accident rates and H&S Audit scores were of considerable concern to the company. The actions required to turn things around were clearly stated in the company's business initiative and objective statement: "Improving business performance by training, initially concentrating on health and safety, leadership and communication. "Profit for business survival and the requirement to change the culture of the company especially in respect of health and safety, leadership and continuous development.
"Management felt that by first leading and managing health and safety effectively in the work place, you also manage discipline within the workplace." The Japanese-owned company employs 300 people in the UK spread across its manufacturing site in Stockton-on-Tees and sales distribution centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield. The judges noted that in the difficult circumstances facing the company in 2004 it would have been tempting to throw money at training initiatives in an attempt to resolve problems quickly. But, instead, the company identified a systematic, prioritised set of education and training development programmes. Equally as important was the establishment of a monitoring program to measure the impact of training investment on performance criteria. The judges noted that the company was in it for the long haul, conscious that you cannot change culture and business performance overnight. The judges felt that the focused initiatives implemented by this company have resulted in tangible and qualified improvements. Nifco's aims of the education and training investment and the specific areas that this investment impacted upon. Constant monitoring of the extent of these improvements over a sustained two-year period assisted the judges greatly in their decision-making."
